Case Studies - Heal-A-Horse

Fourteen (14) year-old thoroughbred mare brought to Professional Animal Health, Inc. (Newcastle, OK) on April 11, 2005. Right upper forelimb severely lacerated by barbed wire two (2) days earlier. Tetanus vaccination history was unknown.

Day 1

Dr. J.T. Walker scrubbed the wound twice using Heal-A-Horse ® Antiseptic Cleansing Gel as directed, then applied Heal-A-Horse ® Antiseptic Wound Spray twice, focusing on deep, punctured or contaminated areas for the second application.

Heal-A-Horse ® Wound cream was applied three (3) times on Day 1. Mare was vaccinated against tetanus using both tetanus toxoid and tetanus antitoxin. Injectable antibiotics were administered.

Day 2

Hydrotherapy (garden hose) started this day and then continued once daily. Again, Antiseptic Wound Spray applied once to the problem area to help remove unwanted tissue and possible infection. Applied Wound Cream three (3) times that day.

Starting Day 3:

Continued hydrotherapy until healthy tissue started to form over the wound, then used throughout treatment as necessary. Applied Wound Cream 2-3 times daily, gently rinsing the wound with warm water before each application. ONLY used Antiseptic Wound Spray on areas where "proud flesh" started to form. Generally only 1-2 spray treatments were necessary to control proud flesh. Injectable antibiotics continued as indicated.
